Dear Charlotte
I will try to write a fiew lines this evening to inform you that I am well and that I received yours of the eleventh to day. I was verry glad to hear you were all so well. It is a great blessing to have good health in our times. I never felt better than now and I havent felt about the war as I do now. I have wrote a great meney times that I thought it wouldent last much longer but I done it to put a good side out but now I think diferent. The fall of Atlanta and the capture of the Welden railroad and the great Union victory at Bunkerhill makes a great change in feeling both in the army and north. I think we can see through now. I believe one more campaign will put down the rebellion and that I think will be this fall and winter. I hope Grant will have success in his next movement which we can expect to hear every day. Lee will have to do something before long and when Sherman advances again he will drive Hood faster than he did this sumer. They have lost all their best fighting ground in Georgia. We will miss our old leader Col Ireland. There is but fiew such officers as he was in battle and out. The generals in this department thought a great deal of him. We followed him to the depot with sober faces. The 137th has lost its best friend. Col Barnum of the 149th NY Vols has command of the brigade now. We had a review the other day and he rode Col Irelands pretty gray horse. It made us all feele verry bad to see his horse with a new rider. It wasent the gray he got in Binghamton. It is a better one. He flirts around with the gray horse and puts on more stile than we can bear to see. One of the 102 NY holerd the other day and ask him if he had Col Irelands boots too. We dont like him. His owne regt hate him. Dear Charlotte we havent got pay yet but we look for the paymaster every day. I have just heard he was at the depot and I think he is. I will let you know tomorrow. Gold is coming down and I think provitions must too. I hope so.You say you have found a place to live to Mr Greenes. You think you would like it there. I dont like upstairs for children. I am afraid they would fall and perhaps kill them. You know how afraid I was to have Matie clime up stairs but you must do as you think best. If you think you can take care of the children and get along but it will be unhanded. You will have to lug all your wood and water up stairs and then you cant watch the children. I wont say eneything about it one way or the other. You must do the best you can. I will send you my money and that is all I can do but I shal feele uneasy if you go to Jeffs to live on account the children are just the right age to fall down stairs if they have a chance.
