Dear Charlotte
It is a great pleasure that I write you a fiew lines in answer to your kind and welcome letter of January first and tenth. I hadent heard from you in a great while and I havent had verry good courage to write but it is not so now. I know you are alive and well. I am enjoying the best of health. You was at Mr Bartons when you wrote part of your letter. You should have taken Matie with you and made a good visit. I would like to go there on a visit myself. You wanted to see Matie so bad so soone. How do you think I stand it so long and so far from home and what would you do if you hadent see Johney atoll but I am determined to be gritty and go through. It is onely eight months more but I do want do see you all verry much. We dont expect to stay here but a short time. I think not more than one weak. The nineteenth corps is here doing duty. I am sorry we cant stay here this winter. If we could I could make two hundred dollars. I have got $125 now. I made thirty dollars to day. I bought a parel of apples. Give $25. I retailed them out for a dollar per dozen and it came to $55. They are verry scearse. I want to pay this on our place if my wages can support you. If not I will send it to you. I shall send it as soone as I think it will go safe. If I was clear from Uncle Sam I would make $20000 in a fiew months but what I have got now will help us some. You sead I must guess who finished your letter. I guess it was Hester. Tell her to write more next time. I had to laugh when I read about Johneys shouting. It dont seam hardley posible that he talks. I guess Matie has forgotten me. You havent sent your likeness yet. I am anxious to get it. I will buy some paper here and suspenders too so you wont have to bother to send them. You wanted to know what to do with them logs. Sell them if you can. I have got a coupple of songs I will send you. One the Sherman Campaign in Georgia. It is a true song. The other is reather spicy so I guess I wont send it unless you want it. It is a good one. I will close for this evening. It is getting late. Write as often as posible and tell me all the news. My love to you and all inquiring friends if I have eney. Good buy dear Charlotte.
