Fairfax Va
Dec the 13 1862

Dear Charlotte

I thought I would write a fiew lines to you to let you know where I am. We started from Boliver the tenth. The time I told you in my last letter wich I wrote the ninth we marched thirteene miles the first day and Rast and I had to go on picet the first knight. It made it reather hard for us. We couldent sleep much. The next morning we started and went one mile beyond Leesburg and the next day we marched until noone and stoped until this morning. We started and now we are in the woods near Fairfax where there has ben some hard fighting done. We haint a great wais from the old Bullrun ground. I should like to go there. We are about eightteen miles from Washington. We are agoing to stay here til Monday and then we start for some place I dont know where but we think to reenforce Burnside. I stand it verry well to march but I have a heavey load. I took all the vittles I could that you sent me and we have got 40 rounds of catrage. It makes a heavey load. We sleep in the open air and in the morning our blankets are white with frost. It is quite warm days but knights it freases hard. My cough is better. I take that syurp every day. It helps me. That musterd comes good on our march. I heard there wasent agoing to be eney winter quarters this winter. I guess Burnside is agoing to whip them by spring. I think he will burn their sides before long. I hope we can help do it. The whole army seems to be on the move for Richmond. I hope we will have good success there. I would like to know how Billy is. He is agoing to write us soone as he gets better. You must write often and direct as before. I will write every chance I have but you musent be disappointed if you dont get a letter every week for we are moveing from one place to annother and we dont alwais have a chance to send letters. This letter will go to Washington tomorrow and I shal look for a letter from you tomorrow knight. I shal have to stop writing. It is sundown and I am tired and I must eat my super and scrape some leaves togeather for a bed. I am well and I hope this will find you all well. No more at preasent.

From you af husbmand Charles Engle
