My Dear Wife
I received your kind and welcome letter last knight after being out to work at the fort and it pleased me verry mouch. They caled us out this morning but the ground was froze so hard we was sent to our quarters until further orders and I thought I would improve the time by writing a fiew lines to you. I am well. That breaking out dont plague me mouch now. We have got a bank built up from the ground and it is much better than to lay on the ground. I think laying on the wet cold ground when we was on the march is what caused that breaking out. We call it the ground itch. O Charlotte how sorry I am to hear that Rast is deaf. I want him to have his discharge and go home but I would like to have him with me so if eney thing should hapen we could help each other but I dont think he ever will come to the regement again. He wrote to you he was broken down. I am sorry to hear it. It wants a strong constitutioned man to be a soldier that can do duty every day. I have ben verry lucey. So far I have ben to the doctor but once. That was when I had the ganduery. There was two or three days that I dident do eneything. You seas you couldent send the box. I wish I had it but you neadent send it until I write for it. They are granting furloughs now. They let them stay ten days. There cant but one man go out of my compeny at a time and when he gets back there can a nother go. If it dident cost so mouch I would apply for one. I dont know as I could get it but I dont know why. I have awlwais ben willing to do my duty in every place and I kind of think I can get one if eneyone in the comp can. It would cost 12 dol to go. They say we are agoing to be mustered for pay next Sadurday and I guess we will get pay about the midel of March. There is four months pay due. I dont know weather we will get more than two months or not. We have got to draw all the clothes we will nead for the next three months. I dont know what it is for. Some think the war is going to be setteld soone and they want to tack all the clothes on us they can as they have got them on hand. It is rather that or else we are going to be sent off where we cant get clothes when we want them As far as I am conserned I would like to take a trip down to North Carolina or some where down that way but for your sake I hope we wont go. I dont want you to make eney more trubel. You heard soldiers letters were opend. That is not so. You wanted to know about my socks. Them two pairs you sent me are as good as ever. That pair I brought with me is worne out. I dont know as I have enything more to say. You must excuse this writing. My fingers are cold and I wrote in a hurey. I have just looked at yours and Maties likeness. It looks so good to me but it would seem better to come home.
I hope this find you all well. ______. You neadent look for me but I should like to come but I couldent stay onely 6 or 7 days and it would come hard to start back. O how I would like to see you and Matie. I have most notion to come see you. I would if you dident need the money so bad. I guess I could borrow money to come with.
