(Note: This letter is undated but may be the continuation of the November 14, 1863 letter).
The soldiers have fought and won some glorious victories this summer and I am verry much pleased to hear of the victories at the north at the ballot box. Three cheers for the great victory. It is worth more than all the rest and I think it will do a good deal towards crushing this rebelion. I heard a good meney of the 109th went home to vote. It is all they ever have done if they voted right. I heard they spoke well of soldiering. What do they know about soldiering. Just as much as we would if we had staid to Binghamton. Let them go through with what we have and they wont crow so much but I hope they will stay there on Jacobs acount. I hope he never will have to march and fight. I dont think he ever will and I dont think eney of us will have to fight a great deal more. Braggs men are leaveing him as fast as they can get away. I see 74 yesterday that came in. They belonged to the 31 Allabama regt. They sead there was another regt that was coming in last knight if they could get away. Them that came in yesterday used to be Pemertons men. There was some officers came in the other day. They sead they dident think the war could last more than 60 days but I guess they will hold out this winter yet but I dont think it can last a great while longer. They cant live on what territory they have got. All the woman and children about here have to live on is corn in the ear. They boil it and grate it up and bake hoecakes and a good meney hanit got but verry little of that. You want to send me a box. I would like something to eat from home. It would do me a good deal of good but I dont think it would come through. I know it wouldent now. When they get the railroad built there will be a better site for getting a box through. If I think it will come I will let you know. If I had just one meal from home it would do me a good deal of good but I can get along with out it. All I wish is plenty of hardtack and pork and I wont starve. There will be some sutlers in here before long and I will buy something good. You have to buy flour now. I think you had better buy the grain and have it ground. You must try and get some apples for Matie. I would like to se you all verry much. Give my love to all our folks.
