My Dear Wife

I wrote you a fiew lines yesterday but as we are laying still to day I will write a little more. The cars run to Kingston so I will have a chance to send a letter. I am well this morning but feele pretty old. We havent done much fighing but a great deal of marching. Last Sunday our corps done the most of the fighting. We routed the rebs from a strong position. The western boys begin to cheere Hooker. The first divition of our corps saved the fourth corps from being all killed or captured. General Geary orderd our brigade to charge a fort. We started and in a fiew minuets Col Ireland was in front of his brigade swinging his sword and ordering us to lay down. Geary reported him to Hooker and Thomas. They approved Irelands plan. They told Geary they dident want their men slaughterd in no such way. The ground was verry uneaven and covered with timber. We got the rebs first line of breastworks and silensed their guns four peacies in the fourt. They commensed to retreat a little before dark. They cept up a bold front and at eleven made their last charge which they had to do to get away. There was a terable sharp musket for a fiew minuets and it ceast. All was still and the cheere commenced far to our right one regt after another as far as the charge extended. Our brigade lay in front of the fort. We killed rebs but a fiew roods from our line. One officer we killed had a bottle of whisky and gunpowder. Monday morning we started after them. I cant tell how how meney prisoners has ben taken. You will see it all in the papers. Johnsons army must be discouraged. We thought they would make a stand here but they are skedadeling. They negroes say it takes half of the rebs to make the rest fight and I guess it is a good deal so. This is a hard campaign but I hope it will close the war. I think it will if Grant has good luck in Virginia. I am sorry the Colonel was hurt. We nead him here. He was hit by a peace of shell. I guess he will be back soone. He wasent hurt verry bad. Write as often as you can. I hope you are all well. Good buy.

Dear Charlotte

I wrote a letter this forenoone but dident send it so I will write a little more. We have just had some orders read to us to prepare for a twenty days march. I dont know where we are going but I think we will leave this department perhaps to reenforce Butler. I heard the fourth corps was going with us. I dont know when I can send a nother letter or get eney. We leave the railroad. The orders sead we couldent depend on the railroad. All sick worthless men are to be sent to the rear. We are orderd not to carey more than we are obliged to. I think we will do some hard marching. We have two days rations of bacon per weak and the rest of the meat will have to be foraged which I think will be reather slim. We get one pound of hardtack flower or meal per day. Dont wory about me. The chaplain is after the mail so I cant write eney more. Good buy.
