Dear Charlotte

I will write a fiew lines to you in answer to yours of June the 21ed. I was verry glad to hear from you and that you was well and that Sophia was getting better. She must had a hard time with her throat. I was afraid it would prove fatal. We have moved twice since I last wrote. Last Monday we advanced three quarters of a mile and built breastworks. It was the hottest day I ever see. I never had the heat efect me so before. We all looked as though we had had a fit of sickness. We took some prisoners when we advanced. One divition in the 14th corps loost 700 men. They was on our left. We lay there untill last knight and we was relieved and we moved two or three miles to the right. We are now on the main road to Atlanta. We found some verry good breastworks here so we dont have to build eney this time. The rebs sharp shooters ceep sending the bullets at us. They shot one poor fellow over in the other breastworks. He took his spider and coffe pail and started to get him his supper and was shot through the neck. He had got about twenty feet from the works when he fell. It was hard to see him lay with his dishes and supper by his side. One year ago to day we marched on the battlefield of Gettiesburg. I shall never forget them three days. I will spend the fourth on a battlefield in Georgia this year if I live. You dident say eneything about your cow in you last letter. You must get rid of her someway. Dont risk your life with her. She must be verry ugley. We was musterd yesterday. They owe us six months now. I wish you had it. I know you need some money. You must try and hire some untill I can get it. I am well and hope you all are. The weather is verry warm. You say it has ben dry north. It has ben verry wet here. It rained most every day in June. Dear Charlotte I want to see you all verry bad. I wish I could have yours and the childrens likeness. I want to see how the baby looks but you neadent have them taken yet. Wait till fall. I hope it wont be long when I can come home and see you and talk with you all. I must close for this time. My love to you.

From your houshmend
Chas Engle
